The former site of Six Flags America in Prince George’s County, Md., has been sold to an investment group that includes NBA superstar Kevin Durant, marking a high-profile homecoming for the county native. The sale of the 515-acre property follows the permanent closure of the amusement park last November.
The investment group plans to redevelop the land into a mixed-use destination. The park had been a fixture in Bowie, a suburb about 20 miles west of Washington, D.C., for decades. It operated seasonally and contributed approximately $3 million in annual tax revenue. County officials have expressed a desire to move toward a year-round model that generates more consistent economic activity and higher tax returns.
Prince George’s County Executive Aisha Braveboy characterized the sale as a transformative moment for the region. In a statement to NBC4 Washington, Braveboy noted the significance of the project’s leadership.
“This is a new chapter for Prince George’s County and one that will be guided by a son of Prince George’s County, NBA legend Kevin Durant,” Braveboy told the station. She further noted that the county plans to work closely with Wanda Durant, the athlete’s mother, to ensure the project reflects an inclusive vision for the community.
Current plans for the property are centered on creating a destination featuring entertainment, upscale dining, and potential sports-related facilities. Braveboy also committed to a process involving significant community involvement to learn what residents want to see at the site.
