Olivia Rodrigo leans all the way into a lovesick daydream in “drop dead,” the first single from her third album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love. The video, directed by the Canadian artist and photographer Petra Collins, finds the singer drifting through the palace in pink old-school headphones and a frilly, ruffly babydoll top from Chemena Kamali’s Chloé prefall collection, along with vintage bloomer shorts and white knee-high socks, as she pines over a crush.
The reference to Sofia Coppola’s pink-clad classic Marie Antoinette is hard to miss. Not only does Rodrigo prance around the French monarch’s old home, but the music video also features a shot of Rodrigo sitting on her bed, “stalking” her crush on a laptop—no doubt a nod to that viral image of Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman holding a MacBook in full costume while on set for the 2006 film. (You know the one!)
Collins treats Versailles much like Coppola did, with the opulent historic building becoming a playful, dreamy stage for raw, youthful emotions. While Rodrigo sings about being bored and in bed, daydreaming about all the things she wants to do with the boy she loves, she dances freely around the grounds. Rodrigo playing a hot-pink Fender Mustang guitar in the middle of the palace feels akin to that scene in Marie Antoinette where a pair of lavender Converse sneakers make a brief appearance.
Deciding to film at Versailles seems to have been a no-brainer, as Rodrigo sings, “You lookin’ like an angel on the walls of Versailles / The most alive I’ve ever been / But kiss me, and I might drop dead.” And by the end, Rodrigo is lying strewn out across the steps of the palace (another nod to the French queen’s fate).
Fans have linked the song to her relationship with her now-ex Louis Partridge. The opening lyrics of “drop dead” are “I know the bar closes at 11 / I hope you never finish that beer,” a reference to both Partridge’s London hometown and photos Rodrigo posted of him drinking beer during their relationship.
This is the fourth time that Rodrigo and Collins have collaborated on a music video. The pair previously came together for “brutal” and “good 4 u,” off her debut album, Sour, and “bad idea right?” from Guts, her sophomore effort.
The countdown to June 12, when you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love is out in full, is officially on.
