Electronic music is experiencing a major resurgence in the United States, with new industry data revealing that dance and electronic music was the country’s fastest-growing genre during the first half of 2026.
The findings come from Luminate’s 2026 Midyear Report, which tracks music consumption across streaming, physical sales and audience trends. According to the report, Dance/Electronic recorded the largest increase in on-demand audio (ODA) share of any genre in the US, gaining 0.51 percentage points during the first six months of the year.
The growth comes amid record-breaking music consumption overall. Global on-demand audio streams reached 2.8 trillion during the first half of 2026, while US streams climbed to 732.7 billion, highlighting continued expansion across the streaming economy.
Leading the electronic music boom are artists including John Summit and Disco Lines, whose recent releases have helped drive the genre’s momentum. Luminate also credits a wave of nostalgia-fuelled listening for boosting electronic music, with tracks from the 2015 to 2017 EDM era—including The Chainsmokers and Halsey’s chart-topping hit ‘Closer’—seeing renewed popularity among listeners.
The report suggests that electronic music’s growth is occurring as the broader US streaming landscape becomes increasingly diverse. While R&B and hip-hop remain the country’s largest genre by overall consumption, their long-standing dominance has begun to level off as listeners embrace a wider variety of styles, including electronic, country and Latin music.
