Although it is not Mexico’s Independence Day, communities across Southern California are preparing to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with cultural events, music and traditional food and drinks.
Cinco de Mayo, observed more widely in the United States than in Mexico, commemorates Mexico’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.
In the years since that victory, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a major cultural celebration, bringing communities together to honor Mexican heritage and traditions.
Here is a list of free Cinco de Mayo events happening across Southern California:
- Venice Cinco de Mayo: Sat. May 2, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Oakwood Park, 767 California Ave., Venice.)
- Plaza México: Sunday, May 3, from 2 to 10 p.m. (3100 E. Imperial Hwy., Lynwood)
- Plaza Olvera: Sunday, May 3, at 10 a.m. Placita Olvera (25 Paseo de la Plaza, LA)
