Sydney’s indie scene has a knack for producing bands that can mask a broken heart with a massive melody, and POLYBIUS are currently leading that charge. Their latest offering, ‘Sun Song’, arrives as a shimmering slice of pop-rock that feels like high summer on the first listen, but reveals a distinct chill once you settle into the lyrics.
The track doesn’t waste any time, opening with a bright, infectious guitar riff that quickly swells into a driving anthem as the rhythm section takes hold. It’s a sound that manages to be both expansive and intimate, balancing polished pop sensibilities with a gritty, guitar-led backbone.
The origins of the track are rooted in a bit of happy musical wandering. Lead guitarist and co-writer Simon Calder explains: “The song originated from the main riff that was accidentally stumbled across on the guitar while listening to “This Is The One” by the Stone Roses. I kept it around for months but it just stayed as a catchy motif. Everyone seemed to have a positive reaction to the riff so finally I began working on it with Tamzin to turn it into a song. The chorus melody is an example of balance where it has long, drawn out lines that juxtapose with the busier instrumentation. The song always felt like you’re driving away from a moment in your past so Tamzin and I made sure the lyrics reflected that feeling.”
While the music offers a sense of forward motion, lead vocalist Tamzin Donovan provides the emotional weight. The lyrics navigate the exhausting territory of a relationship that feels distant despite physical proximity—the classic “lonely while standing next to someone” conundrum.
“Sun Song, for me, is very real and emotional. It was definitely inspired by my relationship at the time and how I felt like I was in a long-distance relationship even though we lived five minutes apart. I also didn’t know how to be on my own once we broke up, as we grew up together, and I needed to find myself again. At its core, Sun Song is an anthem that I see carrying on for a long time. It’s very catchy and relatable, but I’m very biased.”
The track’s evolution from a simple riff into a layered, emotive journey concludes with a gritty, half-time outro—an idea credited to drummer Donovan Lane. It adds a final layer of angst that prevents the song from feeling too sugary, hinting at the band’s ability to lean into heavier textures when the mood strikes.
