Adam Carolla will perform his stand-up comedic rants at the State Theatre in Modesto. The city also is ready for a return of the popular Porchfest musical celebration. There’s more music, along with theater and other entertainment, planned in the Modesto and Mother Lode regions from May 16-22.

Adam Carolla

Outspoken comedian Adam Carolla, a podcast and radio host, is set to bring his stand-up show to the State Theatre. He became known for co-hosting an advice call-in radio show with Dr. Drew Pinsky that later became an MTV staple, “Loveline.” He went on to co-host Comedy Central’s “The Man Show” with Jimmy Kimmel, among other projects. The performance is for ages 18 and older only.

Porchfest

The annual massive community concert, Modesto Porchfest, returns with stages set up throughout the La Loma, college and downtown neighborhoods. Homeowners host local bands and artists on porches, patios and driveways.

“Mrs. Doubtfire”

The famed nanny is headed to the Gallo Center in a touring production of “Mrs. Doubtfire — The New Musical Comedy.” It’s the humorous story of an out-of-work actor who will do anything for his kids. Limited tickets remained available.

America’s Sweethearts

Audiences will hear the vintage sounds of female harmony groups when America’s Sweethearts take the Gallo Center stage. The trio has performed across the country with hits such as “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” A five-piece swing band will provide accompaniment.

The Alex Lucero Band

Originally from Oakdale and now based in Santa Cruz, The Alex Lucero Band will be back home at the Gallo Center. The band performs a fusion of soul, funk, jazz, rock and roots Americana. It has performed in Europe, New York, Boston and other California cities.

“The Bridge on the River Kwai”

The Modesto Film Society offers the 1957 classic “The Bridge on the River Kwai” as its next selection at the State Theatre. The movie is the story of English POWs in Burma forced to build a bridge to aid the war effort of their Japanese captors.

Journey tribute

Journey USA – The Hits of Journey brings its show to the State Theatre. The concert includes synchronized video and special effects. Expect hit such as “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Open Arms,” “Separate Ways,” and “Any Way You Want It.”

Sierra Rep concert

Sierra Repertory Theatre invites audiences to rewind with its “Back to the 80s: A Tribute Concert.” The show is set inside a neighborhood video store on its final night before a corporate takeover. Expect hits from films such as “Back to the Future,” “Footloose,” “Top Gun,” “Flashdance,” “Dirty Dancing,” “Ghostbusters,” “The Breakfast Club,” “The Goonies” and “Weird Science.”
