Korn has crafted nearly 40 songs for its 15th studio album. The recording process stretched across several years. Guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer said that the band has dismantled tracks, rebuilt them from scratch, and hunted for the right material to follow 2022’s Requiem.
“It’s taking a … long time,” said Shaffer to Rolling Stone Brasil. “We’ve written probably almost 40 songs, and gone through ’em, and rewrote ’em, and got rid of ’em, and tore ’em apart, and rebuilt ’em.”
The guitarist said that Korn remains focused on keeping its core sound. The material stays guitar-driven and bass-heavy, with no electronics or departures from what the band established decades ago.
Bassist Ra Díaz and drummer Ray Luzier worked together during this process. James “Munky” Shaffer described the pair as injecting fresh energy into the rhythm section after years of touring as a unit.
“Ray and him play really well together,” he said. “And it’s fun to watch those guys work out parts, because they do some stuff that I wouldn’t think of.”
The writing sessions happened between tours since Korn maintains a packed schedule. Shaffer said the band drew inspiration from Metallica’s approach to balancing new music with live performances.
The upcoming release will mark the first album without contributions from former bassist Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu. James “Munky” Shaffer said that the founding member became disengaged during recent recording sessions before stepping away in 2021. He stressed that no animosity exists between Korn and “Fieldy.” He described the departure as mutual. The band wanted the bassist to focus on his health and happiness.
Lead singer Jonathan Davis called the new tracks “the best music in our lives right now.” The band released one song from the sessions, “Reward The Scars,” as part of a Diablo IV video game expansion in April.
