Meghan Markle has clarified the situation after a selfie with a controversial politician during her recent visit to Switzerland drew criticism.
The Duchess of Sussex traveled to Geneva last Sunday to deliver remarks at a memorial focused on children’s online safety. This week, Wille Rydman, a right-wing politician currently serving as Finland’s minister of Social Affairs and Health, shared a selfie with the Duchess, captioned “A dinner with Meghan.” The pair appear smiling in a photo taken inside the UN headquarters in Geneva, however, its publication triggered public outcry. Social media users highlighted Mr. Rydman’s controversial history, which included accusations of racism and sexual harassment.
In response to the criticism, a spokesperson for the Duchess, who feels “stronger without the soap opera of Prince Harry,” released a statement explaining she had “politely” accommodated the politician’s photo request following the dinner.
They told the Daily Mail, “The Duchess attended a dinner hosted by the World Health Organization in Geneva, where more than 25 ministers and delegates were present ahead of the World Health Assembly.
“As she was leaving the venue, a number of attendees approached her requesting photographs. As is often the case at public engagements, and where time permits, the Duchess politely obliges such requests.”
The spokesperson added, “Understandably, vetting the background of every person who asks for a selfie is not possible. To be absolutely clear, the Duchess does not know Mr Rydman, had no prior awareness of him attending the event, and was unfamiliar with the concerning reports relating to him.”
Mr. Rydman is a divisive and polarizing figure in Finland. In 2023, he became embroiled in a racism scandal after several of his private text messages to his former girlfriend were leaked to a newspaper.
The messages showed him complaining about Muslim women wearing headscarves, referring to people from the Middle East as “monkeys” and describing himself as a “Nazi.”
Rather than issuing an apology, Mr. Rydman stated that he is “committed to equality and non-discrimination.” In 2022, Mr Rydman faced accusations of grooming and sexually harassing young women and girls.
Mr. Rydman strongly and categorically denied the allegations. Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation launched a preliminary investigation into the matter, though no charges were ultimately filed against him.
In February 2023, he released his own book titled The Secret That Did Not Exist.
