The Todayshow host expertly executed a Shoey, an Australian ritual done in celebration which involves pouring beer into a shoe and drinking from said shoe, on live television after the Deadpool & Wolverinecostars did one during a trip to Australia.

“The two became co-owners of an Australian sailing team, currently filming a new reality series following their journey,” Daly said during the Wednesday broadcast. “And while they were down under in Hugh’s homeland, the new team convinced them to partake in a sacred Aussie tradition called the Shoey.”

Jackman shared a video of him and Reynolds performing the act, noting in the caption that he hadn’t done a Shoey in 35 years. “Drink responsibly,” he told the sailing team at the end of the clip.

Daly then asked his cohosts whether or not they’ve done a Shoey. Before they could answer, he untied his shoelace and placed it on his lap, teeing up for the unusual act. Savannah Guthrie tried to hand him her coffee to pour into his shoe, but Daly came prepared, pulling a beer out of his suit jacket pocket.

Guthrie, Jenna Bush Hager, Craig Melvin, and Sheinelle Jones cheered him on, while Al Roker jokingly waved away any stench coming from his shoe. Daily untwisted the beer bottle cap, poured it into his shoe, and took a healthy swig, standing up for dramatic effect.

The Today panel was shocked and excited, and Daly poured more of his brew into his shoe, insisting on doing another Shoey just for kicks.

Later on while all in the Today Show Plaza, Daly proposed a different version of the Shoey. “Next time I’m gonna drink it out of Savannah’s shoe and I’m gonna called it a ‘Choo-y,’ Jimmy Choo shoes. So I’ll do a ‘Shoey’ and a ‘Choo-y,'” he quipped.

“Do you know what I have to do to stick around with these fine, hard-hitting journalists? Some interview presidents, some do Shoeys and Choo-ys,” Daly noted. “Gotta earn your keep, everybody.”

Daly is far from the first celebrity to do a Shoey. Harry Stylesbravely drank from a sneaker during an Australian concert in 2023. “This is one of the most disgusting traditions I’ve ever witnessed,” he declared at the time, embracing the act instead of giving it the boot.
