Claim:

In May 2026, actor George Clooney verbally attacked Southern gospel singer Bill Gaither over the latter’s political views.

Rating:

False

In May and June 2026, people on social media spread a claim that actor and filmmaker George Clooney verbally “attacked” Southern gospel singer and songwriter Bill Gaither. According to one Facebook post (archived), Clooney “thought he could easily score public points by criticizing Bill Gaither over his views on patriotism, traditional values, faith, and the direction of American culture.”

The post said Gaither responded to Clooney in a way the actor “probably never expected.” The post began:

LAST NIGHT: George Clooney attacked Bill Gaither — and received a response he probably never expected.

George Clooney thought he could easily score public points by criticizing Bill Gaither over his views on patriotism, traditional values, faith, and the direction of American culture. But this time, many believe he chose the wrong target.

Known as one of America’s most respected gospel music legends and public figures, Bill Gaither didn’t simply react — he delivered a thoughtful message about freedom of thought, personal responsibility, and respect for everyday Americans.

“George Clooney says my views are contributing to division,” Bill Gaither began, his tone calm but unwavering. “But what truly divides people is the belief that only one perspective deserves to be heard while everyone else should remain silent.”

Additional users spread the rumor in posts on Facebook (archived).

Snopes readers searched the site for the names Clooney and Gaither together. They also searched the site for Clooney in general, Clooney and other celebrities and whether Clooney “attacked” various celebrities.

That was because social media pages shared a multitude of nearly identical stories about different celebrities that George Clooney supposedly “attacked,” all in a span of a few days.

We’ve rated this claim as false because of this, as well as a lack of evidence for these rumors and signs of AI-generation within them.

A Google search of “george clooney attack bill gaither” yielded no credible evidence of such an encounter between the two men taking place. Similarly, a search for just “george clooney attack” did not return any evidence of this exchange; however, the search did reveal that many social media posts claim Clooney verbally “attacked” various celebrities in identical exchanges.

For example, an X post (archived) claimed Clooney verbally attacked Dolly Parton, while multiple Facebook posts claimed he verbally attacked actor Kurt Russell (archived), rodeo racer Hailey Kinsel (archived), hockey player David Pastrnak (archived) and musician Vince Gill (archived), among others.

According to the posts, Parton, Russell, Kinsel, Pastrnak and Gill all said the same words to Clooney:

“George Clooney says I’m dividing people with my opinions,” Dolly Parton began in a calm but firm tone. “But what truly divides this country is mocking anyone who thinks differently and pretending only one side deserves to be heard.”

The post about Gaither claimed he said the same thing in meaning, even if the post didn’t use exactly the same words as the other:

“George Clooney says my views are contributing to division,” Bill Gaither began, his tone calm but unwavering. “But what truly divides people is the belief that only one perspective deserves to be heard while everyone else should remain silent.”

Beyond the template-like writing in these posts, there are other hints of AI-generation within the writing and formatting.

For example, the Gaither post directs readers to an advertisement-filled blog to “watch here.” Snopes has previously reported on the business strategy in which Facebook accounts share shocking AI-generated stories about celebrities to collect advertising revenue off of clicks.

In a blog post about the rumor between Clooney and Russell, the publication date of the post is written in Vietnamese. Snopes has also previously reported on the trend that many of these AI-generated slop stories originate from southeast Asia, particularly Vietnam.

Finally, the writing of the text resembles that of countless AI-generated stories of this kind that are popular on Facebook.

The posts claimed that Gaither and the other celebrities that shared his place responded to Clooney calmly and confident. In some of the blog posts, such as one about Russell and Clooney, the moment before the celebrity’s response created “silence, heavy and electric.” AI-generated stories in which one public figure is debating another, usually about politics, often frame one of the figures as calm. This calm figure usually delivers a line that shocks people, particularly those in a fictional viewing audience, into silence. The description of this silence is delivered in short, punchy sentences for dramatic effect.

Snopes has previously drawn attention to this AI-writing style, including in a recent story pitting Pope Leo XIV and evangelist Franklin Graham against each other.
