Back in February, the Nevada County Historical Landmarks Commission appointed me to chair a committee to celebrate the 175th year since Nevada County was established on May 18, 1851. I reached out to see how many other organizations would like to join us in helping make this special event come alive for the people of Nevada County
Over the past five months, an extraordinary group of volunteers and organizations has come together for this effort, including the Nevada County Historical Landmarks Commission, Nevada County Historical Society, Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum, North Star Powerhouse Mining Museum, Nevada City Fire House No. 1, California State Parks, Grass Valley Ladies Relief Society, Cal Neva A’s, Community Asian Theater of the Sierra, Oregon-California Trails Association, and E Clampus Vitus. Together we are celebrating under the banner of “Nevada County History on Parade.”
We will participate in the Fourth of July parade in Nevada City this year, with special-event floats and walking volunteers in period dress. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for us all, not only because we are celebrating the 175th anniversary of Nevada County, but also the 175th anniversary of Nevada City, the 150th anniversary of the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad, the 50th anniversary of Empire Mine State Historic Park, more than 150 years of the Grass Valley Ladies Relief Society, and more than 175 years of E Clampus Vitus. We are one great team working together to make this special day happen on July 4 at 11 a.m. in Nevada City.
