This post contains spoilers for the July 6 episode of General Hospital.
John Oliver’s explosive three-episode arc on General Hospital started with a bang, and is going out with a slap.
His mysterious Z, who helicoptered into the soap’s fictional setting of Port Charles on July 2, thought himself unstoppable. His first act after touching down was to shoot an injured gunman. But he messed with the wrong daytime diva.
As a high-ranking member of the soap’s shadowy World Securities Bureau (WSB), Z quickly found himself at the center of dangerous crosshairs. Not one belonging to Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy), one of the WSB’s most promising young agents, but her fiercely protective mother, Carly Spencer (Laura Wright).
Monday’s jam-packed close-out to Oliver’s three-episode arc began with a confrontation between Z and Carly, which quickly became physical.
“Jacks was injured, but she’ll pull through,” Z says in a tone only half attempting to console Carly. Josslyn was injured during Oliver’s first episode during a dramatic firefight involving multiple WSB agents. As expected, Carly didn’t take the bait, reproaching Z for referring to her daughter by her last name, spy style.
“That’s what she is, a WSB agent by choice,” he insists, which Carly also contests, reminding Z that Josslyn was “emotionally vulnerable because her boyfriend was brutally murdered,” which was taken advantage of to conscript her into the bureau. Z promises he’ll add Carly to the list to see her wounded daughter, which only agitates her further.

“I don’t want to be added to the list. I want my daughter back,” she warns. Z responds with sass: “Then let me put this in language that you will understand — That ain’t gonna happen.”
Carly then lets it fly, slapping Z with all her might.
Z ends his time on General Hospital officially by offering Ryan Paevey’s Cassius Faison a get-out-of-jail free card. That is, if he wants to come to work for the merciless exec.

Oliver publicly pleaded for a “juicy” role on a soap, any soap, on a March episode of Last Week Tonight. Then, on June 28, he announced he’d officially been extended an invite to Port Charles.
Speaking with TV Insider on July 3, General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini promised, “One of his requests was to be slapped, so he gets slapped by somebody in the show.”

Wright, who served as Oliver’s primary scene partner across his General Hospital run, only had positive things to say about the late-night host.
“We had no idea what to expect,” Wright told Variety on July 2. “A lot of times people like to come on and make fun of what we do, and I’m not a big fan of that. Our job is as important as anyone else’s, and we don’t consider it a different type of acting or anything like that. So, I was so impressed with the writing that honored what he does well while also staying true to what we do, and how he showed up and delivered. It was incredible.”
And the fun isn’t over. Oliver is set for another soap appearance with a three-episode stint on Days of Our Lives for August.
