Lately we’ve been revisiting U2’s Pop era in our Alternative Number Ones column, taking stock of the hits “Discothèque” and “Staring At The Sun.” U2 themselves have spent a lot of time looking back in recent years. There was a How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb “shadow album” How To Re-Assemble An Atomic Bomb, an Achtung Baby-themed residency to open the Las Vegas Sphere, a Disney+ documentary, a sprawling album of re-recorded songs from their catalog, among other retrospective ventures.
Still, U2 have not given up on new music. This year, they surprise-released two EPs timed to the start and ending of Lent, Days Of Ash and Easter Lily. Then, in May, they shot a video for a new song called “Street Of Dreams” in Mexico City and previewed it all on social media. Today, that new single is here.
The Jacknife Lee-produced “Street Of Dreams” is billed as the lead single to an as-yet-unannounced new album, set for release later this year. When it arrives, it will be U2’s first album of new material in nine years, dating back to 2017’s Songs Of Experience. Back in 2022, Bono was talking about wrapping up a new album called Songs Of Ascent but saying he wanted to release an AC/DC-style rock album first. “Street Of Dreams” doesn’t sound like AC/DC, so who knows how the plans have evolved since then. I guess we’ll find out soon.
The aforementioned video was filmed in Plaza Santo Domingo, with the four members of U2 performing on top of a bus for a raucous crowd. Cliqua directs; watch below.
