TikTok is full of surprises when it comes to older songs resurfacing as hits on the platform — and this one will make your jaw drop. The classic rock staple “The Great Gig in the Sky” by Pink Floyd has reached the No. 8 spot on the TikTok Music Charts this week.
The iconic 70s track’s place on the charts can be seen in the Discovery tab of your TikTok app.
“Great Gig” is a standout on the band’s eighth studio album The Dark Side of the Moon, released in 1973. It is perhaps best known for its killer vocal solo improvised by session singer Clare Torrey, who was just 25 years old at the time of recording. That said, the song is going viral on the popular video app due to a new trend that doesn’t focus on the song’s incredible solo.
The TikTok trend using “Great Gig” has a very cinematic quality to it. Users on the platform put text on screen overlaying a video that essentially describes something that “won’t” happen, but the video then cuts to a screen with a “directed by” credit on it. From there, it cuts again to a video of the very thing the user claimed wouldn’t happen. A clip from the song is included as the backing track for these posts.
The video format tends to be used to dramatize couples either getting together or breaking up on the app, but can have a broader usage depending on the situation described by the user employing it in their post.
This isn’t the first time there was a bit of an internet trend surrounding “Great Gig.” Back in 2023, there was a TikTok and Instagram Reels trend that saw many outstanding female singers trying their hand at Torrey’s masterful solo. The improvised run is no easy feat, but many women showed up and showed out for the trend and highlighted their impressive pipes in the process.
“The Great Gig in the Sky” is also having a resurgence on the Billboard music charts lately as well, which may very well have at least a little bit to do with its rise in popularity on TikTok. Dark Side of the Moon recently reentered the Top Albums chart at No. 35 and has seen a 72% rise in sales in the most recent tracking period, according to Forbes.
