BENNINGTON — This June, Bennington Theater invites audiences to experience Shakespeare through a distinctly local lens with “Much Ado About Nothing: A Revolutionary Production,” a bold reimagining of the beloved comedy set against the backdrop of the American Revolution in Bennington, Vermont.
As communities across the region commemorate the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Battle of Bennington and the founding of the United States, this timely production connects one of Shakespeare’s most enduring stories with the history that shaped Southern Vermont. Perfect for history lovers, theatergoers, and summer travelers alike, the production offers audiences a uniquely Bennington interpretation of a classic work.
Set in a town alive with revolutionary fervor after breaking from British rule, the story follows two very different romances unfolding amid uncertainty, celebration, and political tension. Young lovers Claudio and Hero find their future threatened by the schemes of the bitter Loyalist Don John, while the endlessly entertaining rivalry between Beatrice and Benedick slowly reveals a deeper connection beneath their sharp wit and verbal sparring.
Filled with comic misunderstandings, playful language, and emotional twists, “Much Ado About Nothing” explores deception, reputation, love, and the enduring importance of truth and human connection during moments of societal upheaval.
Directed by David Dubov-Flinn and written by William Shakespeare, this inventive adaptation blends Revolutionary-era America with Shakespeare’s timeless humor and insight, creating a production that feels especially resonant as Bennington reflects on its historic role in the nation’s founding.

Performances will take place at Bennington Theater, located at 331 Main Street in downtown Bennington at 7 p.m. on June 12, 13, 29, and 20 and at 2 p.m. on June 14 and 21.
