Thanks to Adolescence, Netflix has pulled off a three-peat.
As predicted, Adolescence’s trophy for Best Limited Series gave the streamer its third win in a row in the category, following Baby Reindeer and Beef. That streak ties the record set from 1986 to 1988 by NBC (Peter the Great, A Year in the Life, and The Murder of Mary Phagan).

The series that became a worldwide phenomenon converted an impressive 13 nominations into eight wins, led by the triumphs for limited series and stars Stephen Graham, Owen Cooper, and Erin Doherty. “This kind of thing doesn’t happen to a kid like me,” said Graham, who pulled off an upset over The Penguin’s Colin Farrell. “It shows any dream is possible.”
Cooper’s win also set a record; at 15, he is now the youngest male actor to win an Emmy. “Tonight proves if you listen and focus and step out of your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life,” said Cooper onstage. “It may have my name on the award, but it really belongs to all of the people behind the camera.”
“It was the definition of a team effort,” agreed Doherty, who credited Graham and executive producer Hannah Walters in her speech.
Director Philip Barantini was recognized for the series’ much-heralded one-shot technique; series cocreator Graham also won for writing along with Jack Thorne. “We never expected our little program to have such big impact,” said Graham when accepting for Best Limited Writing. “We’re very grateful that it did.”
Television Academy voters also recognized the critically acclaimed series with wins for cinematography and not surprisingly casting, given the much-heralded discovery of Cooper.
Though the series tackled the difficult subject matter of a teenager’s murder of a classmate — and brought up issues of incel culture, toxic masculinity, and the dangers of social media — it scored with audiences and critics alike for the sensitivity with which it delivered its emotional punch.
“It was made with love, respect, humility, dignity, passion, and utmost care and mindfulness of the subject that we were talking about,” Graham told Gold Derby in our exclusive digital cover story. “When you make something microcosmic, which is enveloped with love and passion, then it has the possibilities to resonate.”
And resonate it did.
