Tomeka Thiam has filed for divorce from Akon, bringing to an end a relationship that has lasted nearly 29 years, following a bizarre Livestream incident last year.
According to TMZ, court documents submitted Thursday, September 11, show that Thiam cited irreconcilable differences in her filing. The date of separation was marked as TBD.
The pair share one child together, 17-year-old daughter, Journey.
Thiam is pursuing joint legal custody of Journey, while seeking physical custody for herself and visitation rights for Akon, who the Mirror US spotted with in October at Los Angeles Fashion Week.
She has also requested spousal support and asked the court to refuse any such support to the singer.
“We all have different households, we all have different lifestyles,” Amirror revealed in a discussion with Rie Wit the Tea.
“We don’t have to see each other, so we don’t have to be cool with each other… Akon is the type of man [where] it’s not manipulation, it’s just, if you f— with it [or] you don’t. This is our culture… Every woman wants to be the only one, and it’s okay.”
Akon has justified his parenting style, claiming he provides emotional and financial support, even when not physically present.
“My job ain’t to be doing all that extra stuff and these holidays and recitals,” he stated during the Zeze interview.
“While I’m taking care of my responsibility to make sure the family has a roof over their head and food, if I have the time to do that and show love, yes, I will do that. Communication allows me to be there every day. That’s what my FaceTime phone is for.”
Akon has not responded to The Mirror US’ request for comment on the divorce filing.
