Al Pacino pays tribute to his late Godfather co-star Diane Keaton after her sudden death at the age of 79 this week.
Al, 85, who had an on-and-off relationship with Diane from 1974 to 1990, honored his ex with a touching message shared by Deadline on Thursday, admitting “I was shaken.”
“When I first heard the news, I was shaken,” Al’s tribute read, following him admitting that he had “regrets” over his and Diane’s romance. “Diane was my partner, my friend, someone who brought me happiness and on more than one occasion influenced the direction of my life.”
Although the two hadn’t been with each other in three decades, Al admitted that “the memories remain vivid, and with her passing, they have returned with a force that is both painful and moving.”
The Scarface star then praised Diane, sharing how she “lived without limits, and everything she touched carried her unmistakable energy.”
Also, the Devil’s Advocate alum raved over her performances on-screen, praising her for being a “magnetic—lightning and charm” who was a “wonder” given her talent as an actress.
“Acting was her art,” Al added. “But it was only one of the many ways she expressed her imagination and creativity.”
He later penned that “people will miss her,” and more importantly, “they will remember her,” since she “left a mark that cannot fade.”
Al noted, “She was unstoppable, resilient and above all, deeply human. I will always remember her. She could fly—and in my heart, she always will.”

Diane reflected fondly on her time with Al years after their relationship was over. Their romance first started after they finished filming The Godfather Part II, in which Al reprised his role as Michael Corleone and Diane reprised her role as his character’s wife, Kay Adams.
Down the road, Al and Diane ended up co-starring in all three of the Francis Ford Coppola Godfather trilogy.
“I was mad for him,” Michael confessed to People in 2017. “Charming, hilarious, a nonstop talker. There was an aspect of him that was like a lost orphan, like this kind of crazy idiot savant. And oh, gorgeous!”
Diane revealed that their romance came came to its end after delivering Al an ultimatum after he wouldn’t commit to marriage.
“I worked hard on that one,” she recalled to the news outlet. “I went about it in not a perfect way.”
