You know the hype is paying off when a piece of movie merch sells out before the film even hits theaters. Right now, the most wanted fashion item is not a niche designer bag or an impossibly exclusive sneaker collab, but rather a slinky windbreaker with the title of Timothée Chalamet’s new movie, Marty Supreme.
The sporty jacket, in a ’90s-inspired colorblock design, looks like something out of the Nautica catalog of most millennials’ childhood, or a vintage Ralph Lauren design with a flashy twist (the embroidered stars in the front). The piece was created by Doni Nahmias (of Nahmias), Chalamet’s stylist Taylor McNeill, and A24, who is behind the movie.
It retailed for $250, and was made in black, red, blue, and a bright orange that has come to be associated with the film. The blue ended up being the clear fan favorite, but all colorways sold out fast in an if-you-know-you-know pop-up that was held in SoHo on a random Thursday in November. Now, resale sites are upping the price on the viral windbreaker, and there’s no word on when, or if, more will be produced.
Fueling the fire of the collective obsession for the piece are the celebrities. We first saw the jacket on Chalamet, of course, followed by his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, who wore it to a New York Yankees game she attended with him back in October. Since, the merch has been spotted on Kendall Jenner, Justin and Hailey Bieber, Tom Brady, and Kid Cudi, to name a few. During the Las Vegas F1 Grand Prix, some influencers were also spotted in the jacket.
The virality of this piece of merch may remind us of Beyoncé’s “Levii’s” collab for Cowboy Carter, or Zendaya’s “I Told Ya” shirt by Loewe that took the spotlight during her Challengers press tour, or even the trans rights “Protect the Dolls” tee. But have we ever, in modern history, seen any piece of movie merch go as viral as Timmy’s?
The actor’s faux marketing Zoom call may have been a spoof, but he wasn’t wrong when he said Marty Supreme would be the name on everyone’s lips—even if most of us want the merch more than we want the movie, at this point.
