It’s time for the most glamorous, star-studded red carpet of the year: the Festival de Cannes or Cannes Film Festival. In its 79th edition this year, the annual event brings together the crème de la crème of international cinema—from Hollywood directors, producers, and writers, to legendary actors and industry newbies.
Every year, a fresh batch of new movies premieres, and their stars flood the red carpet in fabulous fashion ahead of the starry screenings. The films then compete for the prestigious Palme d’Or award, judged by a celebrity jury.
This year, 22 films are in the running. Key projects include Paper Tiger, starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson; The Man I Love with Rami Malek; Pedro Almodóvar’s Bitter Christmas; and All of a Sudden, a French-language drama starring Virginie Efira.
Japanese cinema is a big highlight at this year’s festival, and the celebrity jury includes South Korean director Park Chan-wook, plus actors Demi Moore, Chloé Zhao, Ruth Negga, and Stellan Skarsgård. The group arrived in Cannes this morning, and posed on the Palais des Festivals’s iconic red carpet.
Speaking of, just as exciting as the awards themselves is the Cannes red carpet. Even with its strict dress-code regulations, the bright red walk to the Palais, with the Côte d’Azur as its backdrop, is Old Hollywood glamour at its best.
The Cannes Film Festival runs from May 12 to May 23. Ahead, see the best celebrity red-carpet photos from the event and watch this space for updates as the stars continue to arrive.
