Carrie Underwood may have a lot of hits when it comes to her music, but there was one iconic song that almost didn’t come to be.
The American Idol judge’s most famous song is likely her hit single “Before He Cheats” off her 2005 debut album Some Hearts. The song garnered much acclaim at the time of its release, and two decades later, people still love to hear Carrie sing it. But did you know she almost didn’t record the track that kick-started her career after winning season 4 of the hit competition series?
As Carrie revealed in a January 21 interview with People, there were some reservations at the time about her putting out a tune like “Before He Cheats.” As for the reason, she said it came from trying to maintain the image she had cultivated while competing on American Idol.
“I remember even when we were talking about recording that song, it was kind of like, ‘Oh, is this too aggressive? Is this too…’” she told the outlet. “I was like a sweet farm girl on [American Idol] — and I hope that’s who I still am — but it was almost, ‘Maybe we don’t do this song.’”
As listeners are well aware, Carrie released “Before He Cheats” anyway, and it eventually appeared on her first album.
What’s more, Carrie noted that, 20 years after “Before He Cheats” debuted, she loves that it’s still an anthem among her fans today.
“Everybody loved it so much, we went for it and it … worked,” she added. “20 years later, we still see people perform it, and it’s a lot of fun.”
