Americans Are Turning Classical Music Into a Social Experience, New Research Finds | 2 Urban Girls

Ahead of World Music Day, research reveals Americans are among the world’s most socially engaged classical music audiences

Classical music may have a reputation for tradition, but new research suggests Americans are increasingly experiencing it as a social activity.

According to Classical Pulse, the first-ever global study by Candlelight®, based on insights from 8,000 respondents across more than 10 countries, the United States recorded the highest percentage of people who view classical concerts as an opportunity to share a cultural experience with others.

Key Findings from the U.S.:

Classical music remains highly relevant

• More than half of Americans report having a direct or indirect connection to classical music, making the U.S. one of the most engaged markets surveyed.
• 52% view attending a classical concert as a shared cultural experience, the highest rate among all countries included in the study.

Audiences want new ways to engage

• The U.S. recorded one of the highest levels of disinterest among non-attendees, with 35% saying they are not interested in attending classical concerts.
• At the same time, genre-blending performances emerged as the most preferred concert concept, signaling demand for more accessible and contemporary interpretations of classical music.

To explore how audiences engage with emerging classical music experiences, the brand, presented by Fever, surveyed more than 1,000 Candlelight attendees in the U.S., finding that:

Candlelight reflects changing audience habits

• 60% of U.S. attendees attend Candlelight with a partner, one of the highest rates among all surveyed markets.
• 51% say they are very familiar with the musical programme before attending, indicating strong interest in specific artists and repertoire.
• 79% are attending Candlelight for the first time.
• Only 26% are attending their first-ever classical concert, suggesting the format appeals to both newcomers and existing classical music audiences.

The findings suggest Americans are not turning away from classical music. Instead, they are embracing experiences that make the genre feel more social, accessible, and connected to modern cultural habits.
