Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor could cause a further headache for the Royal Family amid speculation that he will attempt to cover his legal fees with taxpayer funds. The former Duke of York was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office last month, spending 11 hours in custody on his 66th birthday relating to his time as UK trade envoy. The question of how he will fund his legal representation if charges are brought against him remains unclear, but one option would be to apply for legal aid, which could see him cover his court fees with taxpayer cash.
Royal expert Richard Eden said such a move would be “a terrible look” for the Firm and suggested King Charles would be more likely to foot any potential bills personally – which in itself would present an “awkward” situation. He told the Palace Confidential podcast: “If, for example, he were to apply for legal aid, which British people can get, which is taxpayers’ money to fund legal support, [he] would have to disclose what funds [he has]. So that would be interesting.
“But the idea of taxpayers paying for Andrew’s legal fees would be a terrible look for the Royal Family. Technically it is [a possibility] but I think the King certainly would want to avoid that. But it [then] presents the awkward situation that in the King’s name he could be prosecuted and at the same time, the King could be funding his defence.”
Andrew became the first member of the British Royal Family to be arrested in almost 400 years on February 19, and despite his release under investigation, public scrutiny of the King’s younger brother has continued to run rampant in the weeks since.
King Charles released a statement following the arrest, which read: “I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office.

“What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities.

No charges have been brought against Mr Mountbatten-Windsor, who was released under investigation.
