Another city is trying to rid itself of any association with the disgraced Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, and this time it’s coming from his ex-namesake. York, where Andrew was once the Duke, could be set to remove his dedication at the Minster, a 1,400-year-old cathedral at the centre of the city.
Officials at the historic building are set to launch a review into a stone bearing his name, which is embedded into the floor of the ancient cathedral and marks the day that Andrew unveiled restoration work, on June 19, 1998. However, it may be difficult to change due to the Minster’s status as a Grade I listed building.
A York Minster spokesperson told Yorkshire Press: “Alterations to the fabric of York Minster are carried out under the Care of Cathedrals Measure; we will work closely with our statutory partners who advise on the complex process of making changes to the fabric of York Minster as we review the inscription stone.
“York Minster is committed to the protection, care and nurture of all who visit the cathedral.”
Locals have been mounting pressure on the Minster for weeks to remove the stone, with some even asking for it to be thrown in a skip.
A plaque commemorating his opening of the Millennium Bridge on May 29, 2001, is set to be changed. His name has also been stripped from plaques on the Falkland Islands.

The movement has gone across the Atlantic. Prince Andrew Island on the Otonabee River near Ontario, Canada, will change its name. Local officials confirmed its neighbouring island, Gordounstoun Island, will also be changed, having been named after the Scottish boarding school attended by members of the family.
It comes after a series of bombshell accusations tied to the former Prince’s links with paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. He spent 11 hours in custody in February, having been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, relating to activities while he was a trade envoy. He was released the same day.
Andrew has also been subject to sexual assault allegations, including from Virginia Giuffre, who claimed in a high-profile book that the duke sexually assaulted her when she was under the age of 18. She claimed that Jeffrey Epstein had sex trafficked her from the age of 16.
The former duke is not facing any legal action in the UK in regards to Ms Giuffre and has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
