Anna Wintour has finally shared how she feels about The Devil Wears Prada.
The 2006 movie — which was based on a novel written by Wintour’s former assistant Lauren Weisberger — featured Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, the editor of the fictional Runway magazine. Runway was long rumored to be based on Vogue, and Priestly, Wintour. Wintour, who served as the editor of Vogue for 37 years, had often glossed over the movie when it was brought into conversation.
But in an episode of New Yorker’s official podcast published Wednesday, September 10, Wintour finally revealed her thoughts on the movie.
She admitted that she attended the premiere of the movie “wearing Prada, completely having no idea what the film was going to be about.” Wintour also noted that some of her peers expressed concern for her. “I think that the fashion industry were very sweetly concerned for me about the film, that it was going to paint me in some kind of difficult light.”
Despite the alleged portrayal of Wintour, the movie sat well with the famed journalist.
“I found it highly enjoyable,” Wintour said. “It was very funny. Miuccia [Prada] and I talk about it a lot, and I say to her: ‘Well, it was really good for you.’”
Wintour continued, saying that The Devil Wears Prada “had a lot of humor to it. It had a lot of wit. It had Meryl Streep. I mean, it was Emily Blunt, [and] they were all amazing. In the end, I thought it was a fair shot.”
Wintour stepped down as Vogue’s editor-in-chief and is now serving as Chief Content Officer of Condé Nast. Chloe Malle was named Vogue’s new head of editorial content earlier this month.
Production is underway on The Devil Wears Prada 2, which is set to premiere in May 2026 — 20 years after the original movie.
