Ares Director’s Next Film Compared to the Thing & Alien Lands at Paramount

Joachim Rønning has been in the Disney bubble for several years now. The last four features he directed (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Young Woman and the Sea and Tron: Ares) were all under the Disney umbrella.

While he’s not leaving Disney for good (he’s set to do the next Pirates film), it looks like he’s finally going to break away for at least one film. According to Deadline, Rønning is set to helm a project called Here Be Monsters, which was acquired by Paramount at auction.

The film is described as a sea-set survival thriller that is being compared to Alien and The Thing, two of the best horror movies ever made. Based on the title, it’s safe to say that there will be multiple monsters involved.

This premise sounds right in Rønning’s wheelhouse. He clearly has a love for all things nautical. The film that put him on the map as a director is a little movie called Kon Tiki, which is about a group of men sailing through the oceans on a raft.

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of juice Rønning has making original films away from Disney.
