Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater reunited at the New York City premiere of Wicked: For Good, but a body language expert suggested their interaction wasn’t entirely friendly.
The pair have been surrounded by split rumors in recent months after each making a number of solo appearances. They put on a united front, however, on Monday evening as they joined their co-stars on the red carpet.
Ariana, 32, and Ethan, 33, were pictured alongside Cynthia Erivo, Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Yeoh as they chatted at the premiere. Despite appearing together, body language expert Judi James has suggested Ariana and Ethan didn’t seem close and said the singer appeared more interested in 38-year-old Cynthia.
Speaking exclusively to The Express US, James said, “While it’s clearly a relief that Ethan and Ariana can share the same air space, these two red carpet photos are the thinnest of thin gruel in terms of providing any body language signals of romance and affection.
“Or rather they do show very strong signals of ongoing affection but that is from Cynthia to Ariana, not Ethan.”
The body language expert continued, “Ethan seems to have been moved to a closer place in the line-up here but while Cynthia and Ariana chat with a very loving, sisterly response from Cynthia as she employs a warm smile of approval, Ethan stands behind Ariana, perhaps leaning sideways slightly to pay homage to Ariana, but with his eyes looking away from her face.”
And it seems Ethan isn’t the only one showing signs of avoidance, according to James.
“In the closer pic we can seen Ariana’s attention and eye gaze seems to be on Cynthia again while the sharpness of her features and the slight grainy look to his suggests he is again standing behind her rather than engaged in a one-to-one conversation,” she concluded.
The New York film premiere comes after rumors Ariana and Ethan have split after striking up a romance while on the set of Wicked.
Speculation started after the couple were reportedly invited to attend the Ragtime opening at Lincoln Center in New York, but a source claimed they pulled out at the last minute.
The source told Rob Shuter, “They were confirmed. Their names were printed on the guest list. Seats were held. Then, hours before curtain, word came – they weren’t coming. No explanation. Just silence.”
A friend of the couple also suggested their relationship has become “rocky” as Ariana is “operating in a different world” to Ethan with her jet set lifestyle.
Despite the split rumors, both Ariana and Ethan have continued supporting each other by liking social media posts and making comments about one another during interviews.
