Steven E. de Souza, the man who wrote Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1987 The Running Man, is taking the Glen Powell remake’s shaky landing with a surprising amount of amusement. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he joked that some of the new film’s reviews reminded him a little too much of the ones his own movie got decades ago. He said,
I read it and felt that on paper, they got the ending working. Something went wrong between the page and the stage again.
He didn’t stop there. Since Stephen King’s original book has a famously bleak conclusion, de Souza pointed out that every version has been forced to soften the blow.
