Halloween always brings back a lot of fun memories for me.
I used to love to dress up and go trick-or-treating as a kid — my various childhood costumes included Robin (of Batman fame), a skinny Hulk, a werewolf and, for some reason, the writer H.G. Wells — and when my kids were younger it was always a real treat for me to see them getting excited for Halloween as well.
Downtown Wilmington’s residential neighborhoods are always trick-or-treating hotspots, with lots of homeowners going all-out with decor and various antics to delight (and sometimes frighten) the little ones. (Try South Second Street between Nun and Ann, you’ll thank me later.)
Downtown along Front Street is a great place to go to see a bunch of adults in fun costumes.
So whether you’re staying in this year or going all out, I hope you have a great Halloween. Now let’s see what else the weekend has in store.
Weekend weather outlook
After a wet and dreary week, we should have some nice fall weather this weekend. Sunny on Friday and Saturday with highs in the mid 60s and lows in the mid 40s, with a 50-50 chance of rain settling back in Sunday afternoon.
Go | See | Do
Friday night will be crazy this week because of Halloween, but there’s plenty going on Saturday and Sunday in the Wilmington area as well. We’ve got festivals, concerts, film screenings, comedy and much more, full list of curated options below.
The Dish with Port City Foodies
At the D.W. Alchemists “elixirs lounge” on Carolina Beach Road in Wilmington, owner and mixologist Ben Poppel is serving up his alcohol-free creations of a way to foster health and social connection. We paid a visit to the whimsical spot.
Plus, a look ahead to what area restaurants area open on Thanksgiving, and we’ve got a list of food and drink events for November.
Getting to know the Carolina Apartments
We take a look at the history of downtown Wilmington’s oldest apartment building, which dates to 1907.
News you can use
A big music festival with more than 50 bands is coming to downtown. We’ve got the details.
We also look ahead to next week’s municipal elections, and just for fun, I wrote up a list of 11 songs I love by Wilmington bands.
