Arts, entertainment, events, happenings and culture in Wilmington, NC

One of the most enduring traditions on Wilmington’s arts scene, Fourth Friday Gallery Nights has been going on in one form or another since the mid-1990s.

I’ve seen plenty of wonderful art and exhibits, and even bought a few pieces over the decades, at the monthly crawl of downtown and downtown-adjacent art galleries and spaces, which has long been organized by the Arts Council of Wilmington and New Hanover County.

Once, former StarNews arts writer (and current Wilmington artist and musician) Justin Lacy and I tried to hit all 20 or so Fourth Friday spots within a three-hour span from 6-9 p.m. I think we even succeeded.

Fourth Fridays continues this week from 6-9 p.m. Oct. 24. Highlights include “Meet Me Where You Are” at New Elements Gallery on North Front Street, which includes abstract paintings by AnnMarie LeBlanc, objects de arte from Jean Gray Mohs and Lauren Stumberg’s work placing images of birds into abstract settings. Plus, the Soda Pop Gallery on Princess Street will show rarely seen work by artists from around the world done at the long-running No Boundaries International Art Residency on Bald Head Island.

As always, you can check the Arts Council’s website for a full listing of participating venues. Now let’s get on with the weekend.

Weekend weather outlook

It’s looking to be another gorgeous weekend, with sunny skies and low to no chance of rain. Highs near 70, with lows in the upper 40s.

Go | See | Do

Fall is a busy time for events in the Wilmington area, and this weekend is no exception. With a wide variety of Halloween-themed happenings on the docket, as well as a range of concerts, theater, comedy, film screenings, art shows and more, there is absolutely something for everybody. Click below for our curated list.

Getting to know ‘Dracula’

For its Halloween show, Wilmington theater company Big Dawg Productions delivers a laugh-out-loud funny staging of “Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors,” a fast-paced, madcap send-up of the classic vampire tale. Peep my review below.

News you can use

A Wilmington chuch plans to start a coffee shop to support unhoused and low-income members of the local LGBTQ community, a group that includes LGBTQ youth. We’ve got the story.

Plus, an iconic house used as a location in Wilmington-shot show “Dawson’s Creek” hits the market, and we take a look at what legacy, if any, has been left by Wilmington’s relocated Confederate monuments.
