BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Shea Stephens, a film educator at Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC), is one of 18 professors chosen for the 2025 Alex Trebek Legacy Fellowship by the Television Academy Foundation in Hollywood.
According to a news release, the fellowship was created by the Harry & Judy Friedman Family Foundation. It honors the late Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek and provides financial support for educators from community colleges and minority-serving institutions to attend the Foundation’s annual Media Educators Conference.
Stephens, a BRCC alumnus and Film faculty member, focuses on underrepresented voices and helps students use storytelling to spark change.
Besides his teaching, Stephens is an accomplished filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist.

His films focus on identity and Black Southern life. They have been shown at major festivals, including the:
Atlanta Black Film Festival.

According to a news release, he started his journey in theater at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA). He earned a B.A. in Theater from Louisiana State University. He received his M.A. in Film and Television from the Savannah College of Art and Design before completing an M.F.A. in Theater Arts from the University of Idaho.
This year’s three-day conference is on Oct. 22–24 at the Television Academy in North Hollywood.
