Mike D has a new song out. “Crypto” is the fourth track shared in advance of his debut solo album, ‘Thank You,’ arriving August 28 via Capitol Records.
The song is a tongue-in-cheek meditation on fraud and greed, built around relentless rhythm and mesmerizing sonic slabs. The New York Times has already praised the album as a searing, lo-fi blast of analog synthesizer noise and smashed industrial beats, carrying echoes of dub and the dystopian New York punk sound of Suicide.
“Crypto” follows a string of strong advance singles. Glide called “Switch Up” a genre-defying banger, Okayplayer praised “What We Got” as classic and boisterously energetic, and Relix described “True Colors” as a buzzy, pensive, breakbeat-powered wall of acid rock.
‘Thank You’ runs 13 tracks deep, built from inventive post-electronic grooves and hypnotic hooks that lead listeners through a sound defying easy categorization. Rolling Stone praised the record as carrying the same punk energy that fueled Mike D’s early breakthrough.
That energy carries into his live show too. The Mike D 5D touring band, featuring Mike alongside his sons Skyler and Davis Diamond, plus Eddie Ruscha, Will Graefe and Milo Ruscha, returns to US stages on August 30 at Boston’s Royale, just 2 days after the album’s release.
