Beloved Characters’ Return Signals The Beginning of the End For The MCU

Recently, Marvel confirmed some fairly shocking news: Elden Henson will be returning to Daredevil: Born Again for its second season after his character (spoilers, sweetie: you’ve been warned!) was killed by the villainous Bullseye. While there are multiple ways the actors could return after his apparent death, many fans are speculating that we’ll find out Henson’s Foggy Nelson character faked his own death, just like in the comics. Unfortunately, this would signal the beginning of the end for the MCU by cementing that major character deaths no longer matter in this universe.

Comics, Where Death Goes To Die

In case you’re not aware, comic books are notorious for reversing character deaths, with everyone from Jason Todd in DC to Bucky Barnes in Marvel eventually getting brought back to life. And in the original Daredevil comics, there is a storyline where Foggy Nelson is seemingly killed but later found to be alive and well and working with Witness Protection. Some Born Again fans initially thought that Elden Henson’s Foggy Nelson character would follow that same arc, but previously, there was no reason to believe the character would be returning.

Now, Marvel TV bigwig Brad Winderbaum confirmed in a recent interview that Henson’s character would be returning for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. This news was doubly surprising because when he was asked about Foggy Nelson coming back, Henson told attendees of L.A. Comic-Con last month that “I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s just not happening.” It’s possible the actor was trying to keep things a secret, though some have speculated that he meant Foggy wasn’t actually alive and might be coming back for a flashback sequence.

Taking a Page From the Comics

However, I deeply suspect that Daredevil: Born Again will take a page from the comics and reveal that Foggy is secretly alive and has been hiding out in Witness Protection. This would be a win/win for Marvel because they’d keep comics fans happy by adapting the source material. At the same time, Elden Henson’s return would appease audiences who want the show to be more like Daredevil on Netflix, something Marvel is presumably interested in because they are also bringing back Deborah Ann Woll for Born Again’s second season.

These are reasons why bringing Foggy Nelson back is a good short-term plan for Marvel. It’s a terrible long-term plan, however, because it would that character’s earlier “death” completely meaningless. Born Again originally turned Foggy’s death into the one thing that could push Daredevil to try to kill someone; how stupid will it be to revisit that pivotal scene in the future if we find out that Foggy had never even died?

The Final Nail In Marvel’s Coffin

On a larger level, creative decisions like this may turn fans against Marvel at the worst possible time. This cinematic universe has been flailing in recent years and occasionally even bombing at the box office, and Kevin Feige is gambling that an upcoming reboot will make fans care about tights-and-flights movies once again. But if popular shows like Daredevil: Born Again normalize that nobody ever really stays dead in this universe, the public may completely abandon the MCU altogether because of its complete and utter lack of lasting stakes.

Characters dying and inexplicably returning is a staple of comics, but the MCU has generally treated death very seriously, which is why characters like Iron Man and Black Widow haven’t been brought back to life. Resurrecting Foggy Nelson from seemingly certain death might please fans in the short term, especially those who enjoyed the Foggy/Matt bromance of the original Daredevil. In the long term, though, the character’s resurrection would mean the death of lasting consequences in these shows and movies.

And once audiences find out, this may be the final nail in the coffin for the MCU.
