After being closed since New Year’s 2024, the Alabama Music Box made an iconic return back to the limelight with a grand reopening of a new location on Halloween night.

The bar + live music venue has moved to Conti Street but it still wants to capture the same atmosphere as it has provided for years.

Read on to learn more about the Music Box and what future events are in store!

Reminiscing + new beginnings

Co-owner David Matthews said his reasoning for reviving the beloved venue was earnest and straightforward. He woke up one morning and realized it was the only thing he’d wanted.

Since nobody else had filled the void the Music Box left, it was up to him to do so.

“I needed a place like this when I was younger and in a band and wanting somewhere to listen to rock ’n’ roll and be wild.”

David Matthews, Alabama Music Box Co-Owner

Music Box History

The first iteration of the Music Box made its debut in 2008 and was located on 455 Dauphin St, where it would stay for five years until closing due to noise complaints in 2013.

After a 6 year hiatus, the Music Box rose again in 2019 on 12 S. Conception St. This iteration, with its iconic entrance (double doors painted into a mouth and two windows for eyes) hosted artists and music lovers alike on the gulf coast until closing in 2024.

The venue has hosted a variety of different shows and genres including: rock, punk, metal, electronic dance music, comedy shows, hip-hop and much more.

Some local and touring artists who have played at the Music Box:

  • Hibachi Stranglers
  • Morbeato
  • Holy Wave
  • Goodwin Rainer
  • Antiseen
  • Death Valley Girls
  • Mike and the Moonpies
  • Vomit Spots

Each iteration of the Alabama Music Box has been praised as one of the most welcoming venues in the state, for both bands and music lovers alike. And the vibes of the new location should be no different.

Opening on halloween night

The new space, christened on Halloween night, features a horseshoe-shaped bar, music stage, VIP area, pinball machine & other games, art installations + much more. Music Box 3.0 is looking great so far + set to be even better by the time of the next show.

Here’s what the Music Box had to say after the opening night with local band Sh*tfits on Halloween:

“We would never have gotten the doors open without the people who took time out of their busy lives to make this dream happen with us… We do it for the weirdos and the freaks, and we love y’all so much.”
