SAN ANTONIO — Looking to get hitched this Valentine’s Day in San Antonio? If you apply for your marriage license by the end of the day Wednesday, you can get married for free in Bexar County.
The Bexar County Clerk’s office is hosting its annual walk-in mass wedding ceremonies in downtown San Antonio on Feb. 14. Shortly after midnight, couples can stand on the courthouse steps, declaring their promises to love each other for life. Two more ceremonies will take place at 10 a.m. and noon.
Though the ceremony itself is free, Texas law requires couples to obtain a marriage license at least 72 hours before getting married. The only exceptions are if a participant is active duty military or if the couple receives a waiver from a judge.
Applicants must provide a state-issued ID, driver license, birth certificate or passport and also provide their Social Security number, according to the county clerk’s website.
The annual free weddings have been a tradition in the city since 1989. Last year, close to 400 people got married on the courthouse steps on Valentine’s Day. County Clerk Lucy Adame-Clark presided over the weddings last year and will return for this year’s ceremonies.
