Kim Kardashian just helped free a man who spent nearly 30 years sitting on death row. The reality star reportedly stepped in and paid a massive $500,000 bail that allowed former Oklahoma inmate Richard Glossip to finally walk out of prison this week.

The surprising update came after years of legal battles, documentaries, celebrity advocacy campaigns, and repeated arguments that Glossip never received a fair trial.

Kim Kardashian Posts $500k bail for Richard Glossip, former death row prisoner

Film producer and prison reform advocate Scott Budnick shared the news on Instagram Thursday while posting photos of Glossip leaving the Oklahoma County Detention Center.

“After 29 years innocent on Oklahoma’s death row, Richard Glossip walked out as a free man this afternoon,” Budnick wrote before revealing Kardashian had “graciously” covered the bail almost immediately after it was set.

Glossip was originally convicted in connection with the 1997 murder of motel owner Barry Van Treese. Prosecutors accused him of orchestrating a murder-for-hire scheme involving another man who admitted to beating Van Treese to death with a baseball bat.

Glossip has consistently maintained his innocence. Over the years, the case became one of the most controversial death penalty cases in the country. Glossip came terrifyingly close to execution multiple times and even received three separate last meals while appeals continued unfolding behind the scenes.

Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Glossip’s conviction after ruling prosecutors allowed false testimony during the original trial. Oklahoma officials later confirmed they plan to retry him for murder, though they will no longer seek the death penalty.

According to court filings, Glossip’s release comes with strict conditions. He must wear an electronic monitoring device, remain inside Oklahoma, avoid drugs and alcohol, and refrain from contacting witnesses tied to the case.

The emotional release marked the first time Glossip had been out of custody since the late 1990s. “I’m just thankful,” he reportedly said while leaving prison holding hands with his wife, The Independent reported.

Kardashian has quietly become one of the most visible celebrity advocates for criminal justice reform over the last several years. She previously worked on clemency campaigns, prison reform efforts, and high-profile wrongful conviction cases while continuing her own legal studies.

Meanwhile, Susan Sarandon has also publicly supported Glossip’s release over the years.
