Call the Midwife Doctor Truner star has opened up about living with his BBC drama co-star as a new movie looms
Stephen McGann has opened up about the forthcoming Call the Midwife movie and his private life with his co-star wife.
The much-loved BBC period drama has made a triumphant return for a new series, and Stephen has once again stepped back into the role of Doctor Patrick Turner.
The 62-year-old actor has captivated audiences since he first arrived in Poplar as the heroic doctor during the inaugural episode in 2012.
A beacon of hope in the impoverished corner of London, Dr Turner has saved lives, assisted in childbirth, and consistently warmed viewers’ hearts with each episode.
The BBC show is now in its fifteenth series, which has transitioned to 1971, ushering in a new era for the plot.
The fresh decade explores the impact of the Women’s Liberation movement, premature births, cancer diagnoses, and various other topics.
As the period drama ventures into the 1970s, a 16th series has been confirmed. In addition, there will also be a prequel series set in Poplar during World War II, focusing on the early days of Nonnatus House, along with a movie set in 1972.
Stephen has opened up about the forthcoming Call the Midwife film and has given a cheeky insight into his marriage with the show’s creator, Heidi Thomas.

Appearing on Thursday’s episode of The One Show (January 15), the actor joined hosts Lauren Laverne and Roman Kemp, and guests David Baddiel and EastEnders star Kim Medcalf, and opened up about the forthcoming Call the Midwife movie and gave a cheeky insight into his marriage with the show’s creator, Heidi Thomas.
Roman asked, “Stephen, your wife is one of the creators of the show. We have to talk about it, the film being made. Everyone is so excited. What can you tell us?”
Stephen replied: “It’s so hard to say anything. She’s so busy at the moment, she always tells me to go away in so many words. I know it is (the year) 72, I note there is a great thing that lots of the characters will be there because it is in the present day.
“Although they are doing a prequel, these are all the old hands plus maybe who knows, maybe even more people.”
He added, “The great thing about a movie is asking people to come along and be in our episodes, but asking them to be in a movie is a very different attitude.
“The canvas is open, beyond that, I am terrified to ask for anything because last time she said to me I was getting a bit too big for my boots and she said ‘how would you feel if Doctor Turner lost a lung’, I said ‘what’.”
David Baddiel then asked Stephen, “If you have a row with your wife, will she give you a horrible storyline?” as Stephen jokingly replied: “She actually suggested that whole plotline. I did have a row and I am terrified! It was at the breakfast table, she will do it, act in anger!”
Who is Stephen McGann’s wife?
Stephen and Heidi Thomas met in 1988 and tied the knot two years later, both aged 27, and honeymooned in Tuscany before embarking on a new life together in a cottage in rural Essex. They have one son, Dominic.
According to Stephen’s book, A History of My Family in Seven Maladies, he met Heidi after auditioning for her new play at the Liverpool Playhouse.
Call the Midwife airs Sunday at 8pm on BBC One and iPlayer, while The One Show broadcasts weekdays at 7pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
