Emma Ruth Rundle Shares New Song “Enough”: Listen

Multifaceted DJ and producer capshun chats with EDMID about current musical inspirations, the pressure to conform to trends, and not letting a genre define him.

Dallas-based artist capshun has been commanding attention for nearly a decade. Bursting onto the scene in 2018, the musical storyteller creates masterful sonic worlds through his inventive bass-driven soundscapes. Originally finding a home in the future bass world, which dominated the charts pre-pandemic, he has since evolved his sound, transcending genre labels.

While his project cannot be pinned to one subgenre, capshun’s music is a showcase of ingenuity through modern-day bass productions. “I have always loved bass music,” he stated. “I remember the first time that I heard Mr. Carmack in high school. I genuinely didn’t know what I was listening to at all, but I knew that I wanted to make music just like that.”

Releases on RL Grime‘s Sable Valley, bitbird, Deadbeats, and Bassrush have solidified him as a tastemaker within the bass music scene. Returning to the spotlight in March 2025 after a brief hiatus, capshun has entered a new era of his project, fully encapsulating his personal and musical growth.

I think a lot of what I bring to the table now is a refined version of what I have always been doing. It’s uniquely my sound, and when you hear the music, you know it’s me.

Despite being within different lanes sonically, his remix of “Amazing” by Sam Day and his latest single, “Don’t Let Go,” both display the effortless bounce that defines a capshun production.

When asked how he would define his sound, the talented producer responded, “I feel like I could talk all day about what my sound is and try to fit it in a box like I have attempted to in the past. But honestly, I am just trying to make banging, adventurous, and fun bass music. Whether I’m making trap, house, DnB, whatever, I just need you to feel it.”

While many artists let genres shape their decisions when creating new tracks, capshun strays from the mundane, allowing creativity to strike without stifling it. “Since the beginning, I’ve always tried to take the approach of allowing my music to tell a story,” he said.

His 2020 track “Acai Tower” is a perfect example of leading with storytelling. The emotionally driven single, featuring QUIET BISON, shimmers with exotic flair and rich textures as the listener is plunged into the lush forest that the pair skillfully crafted.

While capshun does incorporate elements of the EDM genre he’s setting out to produce, he tries to blend them without boxing the song into the confines of a specific one.

I think that by creating in the moment, I produce whatever I feel like the music wants to be, rather than what I would like it to be. More often than not, the record ends up being something that transcends a genre label. Personally, it’s freeing. I just fuck around really.

When asked what artists are inspiring his current creations, capshun responded, “I love this question because it’s genuinely always changing.”

“Having been in and around the culture and sounds of bass music for the past 10 years, I feel like I am always being inspired by the new sounds and artists that come around every few years,” he shared. “Right now, I really have my eyes and ears on Montell2099, Control Freak, SPORTMODE, Pryzms, cara, sh0wtime, jpky, SAINT MILLER, and Tiaro. They are absolutely killing it and inspire me every day to push my own productions.”

As his artistry has evolved, so has the EDM scene. Emerging before TikTok became a major driver of music trends, the obvious move to producing tracks simply to feed the algorithm is something capshun actively pushes back against. “Something that I have learned is that I am defined by my roots,” he reflects.

It’s so easy for us artists who have been around for a long time, who recognize the shift in culture and sounds, to go with the flow and make what’s popular at the moment because we have the skills to do so. But every time I start down that path, I get in a funk… Once I take a step back and revisit my music, I end up reminding myself that those records, and the feeling I had writing or hearing them for the first time, are why I do this. Then the imposter syndrome goes away, and the music flows right out of me.

From the very start of his project, capshun has conjured up captivating songs that transcend the formulaic bass music that floods social media daily. “I bring my authentic sound and taste into every new style and space of bass music that I attempt to place myself into as I redefine myself within the genre,” he said.

A beacon of light within the bass music realm, his talents have landed him on tour with Subtronics, as he takes his FIBONACCI Tour on the road. Taking a pause from his hectic schedule, capshun has delivered an exclusive mix for the Bass Fidelity series. “The track selection today is a combination of what I love to listen to and some unreleased records. If you see me on tour, you’ll get to experience these mixes and more,” he said about the mix.
