Carpe Diem String Quartet to launch 20th anniversary season with 2 concerts

Founded in Columbus in 2005, Carpe Diem String Quartet tour is shown performing at Carnegie Hall in February 2025. The ensemble will celebrate its 20th anniversary during the Randolph A. Foster 2025-26 Seize the Music Series, which begins with “Beyond the Veil,” a pair of concerts on Oct. 4-5.

Carpe Diem String Quartet defies pigeonholing, its repertoire encompassing the traditional along with folk, pop, rock, tango, Romani and jazz.

Founded by the late Charles “Chas” Wetherbee, the ensemble’s present lineup features Sam Weiser, violin; Marisa Ishikawa, violin; Korine Fujiwara, viola; Ariana Nelson, cello.

CDSQ will mark its 20th anniversary during the Randolph A. Foster 2025-26 “Seize the Music” series.

The season includes two world premieres, part of the quartet’s “15 for 15” commissioning project. All concerts begin at 3 p.m.

The opener, “Beyond the Veil,” will include Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, D. 810, “Death and the Maiden” and other death-related works.

Performances will be Oct. 4 at Harrison House, 570 W. Broad St., and Oct. 5 at First Unitarian Universalist Church (First UU), 93 W. Weisheimer Road.

Mendelssohn and holiday favorites will highlight “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” on Dec. 20 at First UU and Dec. 21 at Our Lady of Victory Church, 1559 Roxbury Road. Tickets for this concert only are available at bit.ly/47QaHPs.

In 2026, the season will offer:

  • “The Sound of Words,” including the world premiere of Michael Rene Torres’ “in the never-ending shore of your tomorrows,” Feb. 28 at Harrison House; March 1 at First UU.

  • “Circle of 5ths,” including Erwin Schulhoff’s Five Pieces for String Quartet, March 28 at the Columbus Performing Arts Center, 549 Franklin Ave.; March 29 at First UU.

  • “An American Story: New Beginnings,” including the world premiere of Erberk Eryilmaz’s “Günü Yaşa ve Dansı Hisset” by CDSQ and Feel the Dance, May 23 at WOSU Ross Community Studio, 18 N. Pearl St.; May 24 at First UU.
