If you’ve been watching Celia Imrie in The Celebrity Traitors this week and want one of her family-friendly works to show the kids over the weekend, you might want to check out The Borrowers, which is being aired on TV this weekend.
The 1997 film adapts Mary Norton’s novel of the same name, and follows a group of thumb-sized people who live in the the floors and walls of people’s houses and use human knick-knacks for their own needs.
Unfortunately for the main family of the film, the house in which they live in is set to be demolished, and they need to put a stop to those plans, without revealing their existence to the world in the process.
In the cast, we’ve got Imrie’s Bridget Jones co-star Jim Broadbent, Father Brown’s Mark Williams, House’s Hugh Laurie, comedian Ruby Wax, and an early role for Tom Felton. The Big Lebowski’s John Goodman plays the villain.
The film is being shown tomorrow (Sunday 12 October) at 12.15pm on Film4, and should be available on the Channel 4 streaming service afterwards.

The film was a solid hit with critics, with a 76% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Legendary critic Roger Ebert called The Borrowers “a charming, whimsical family adventure” that is “wisely modest in its scope: It sets up the situation, involves us, has fun with the special effects and the cliffhanging adventures, and is over in 83 minutes”.

You might also want to check out the Studio Ghibli film Arrietty, which adapts the same novel and features a lot of recognisable British names in its English dub. It’s available to stream on Netflix.
Other Celia Imrie films on streaming you might want to check out include the two Best Exotic Marigold Hotel films on Disney+, The Thursday Murder Club on Netflix, and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again on Sky/NOW (or you could just watch the ‘When I Kissed the Teacher’ music video on YouTube, as that’s all she’s in).
The Borrowers airs at 12.15pm on 12 October on Film4 and will likely stream on Channel 4 afterwards. The Celebrity Traitors airs Wednesday and Thursday nights on BBC One and streams on iPlayer.
