Christina Applegate has been staying at a hospital in Los Angeles after suffering a painful health scare.
On the Tuesday, August 5, installment of her and Jamie Lynn Sigler’s MeSsy podcast – which she recorded from the hospital – the Bad Moms star, 53, revealed she started experiencing symptoms while on a trip to see her family in Europe.
By the time she got home, things had apparently progressed so badly that she decided to go to the emergency room in the middle of the night and insisted on being checked in to the hospital.
“I’m like, I wanna be admitted,” she recalled telling hospital staff. “I’m staying here because I want answers. I want every test that you can possibly think of or ones that you haven’t even thought of, and I want them done.”
Applegate – who also battles multiple sclerosis – said that she was still in significant pain the next day, sparking her own worries that her appendix could be “bursting.”
“So much pain,” she continued. “I’m screaming, and they ordered me an emergency CT at 2 in the morning.”

The results of the scan revealed that Applegate didn’t have appendicitis – she had a severe kidney infection that had already spread to her other kidney. The mother of one, who shares daughter Sadie Grace, 14, with husband Martyn LeNoble, quipped that the doctors initially wondered if she’d had a urinary tract infection due to poor hygiene habits.
“Like, what am I back-wiping? Like, seriously, I’m 53,” she said, noting that she’d once been asked if she wiped from the front to the back. “[I have] the cleanest vagina … I’m a clean girl down yonder.”
As for how she’s doing now, the Married…With Children alum is still in the hospital because she has to be given “intravenous antibiotics” to fight the infection.
“And that’s where we’re at,” she added.
While she’s getting the appropriate care, it’s still been a difficult and uncomfortable situation for her to deal with.
“I’m holding in a bag o’ tears right now,” she confessed. “I sometimes fall into the nurse’s arms like a freako, just like crying.”

Applegate has battled a number of medical issues and health scares over the years.
Back in 2008, she made the decision to undergo a double mastectomy after she was diagnosed with cancer in one of her breasts. In 2017, she opted to have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed as well, as she had the BRCA1 genetic mutation, which heightened her chances of developing ovarian cancer.
Four years later, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. According to the Mayo Clinic, MS is a disease that causes the immune system to “attack the protective sheath that covers nerve fibers,” and can result in mobility difficulties, numbness, weakness, and many other symptoms.
“I couldn’t walk. They had to use a wheelchair to get me to set,” she said of being diagnosed while filming her show Dead to Me during a 2022 interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show. “I was freaking out until someone was like ‘You need an MRI.’ And then, I found out on a Monday after work that I had MS, you know, a disease that I am going to have for the rest of my life.”
