DeKALB – The City Council presented a rough list of interested businesses for the recently passed entertainment district to better understand the limits of where patrons could carry their alcohol on the open streets.
Patrons will be allowed to carry open containers on sidewalks and crossways within the limits of the district. Future discussions will go into solidifying these restrictions.
“Like with everything, when we put our stamp on it,” Alderman Barb Larson said. “We want it to be clear, transparent and everything. We just need to get those ducks in a row.”
Curran Contracting Company is awarded contract for resurfacing
City Council awarded a contract to Curran Contracting Company for asphalt resurfacing in efforts to maintain its street maintenance program on Monday.
Illinois requires the City of DeKalb to prove that the city will utilize the budgeted statement of fuel tax and local motor fuel tax, which classifies as street maintenance. The council budgeted $3 million.
The street maintenance project will take place in the West Hillcrest area. The project will begin on Sycamore Road through Normal Road. The city also plans to clean up patches of the roads of North 1st street from the north side of the Kishwaukee River Bridge to Kilmer Park Dr, along with smaller sites around the city.
“Well, we’re gonna have an exciting year, and this is going to make an impact on a lot of people,” Mayor Cohen Barnes said.
This project will cost a total of $3,208,977.21.
Second reading to Amend Meeting Times for Commissions and Boards
During the meeting, Barnes also called a motion to remove the proposed amendment for the Human Relations Commission due to public and council concerns. At the last city council meeting, these amendments passed in a split in council votes.
This allows the council to meet and discuss the issue further and listen to the concerned parties to revise the amendment more thoroughly.
“There’s a lot of ideas out there and a lot of modifications being brought forward as different ideas,” Mayor Barnes said. “Those ideas would require me to go back to the five organizations I had previously talked to that agreed to be on the commission.”
The next city council meeting will be 6 p.m. on May 11 at the DeKalb Public Library.
