A classic superhero may be getting their own Netflix show, according to a new report.
The Phantom is a superhero character that was originally created by Lee Falk in 1936. Originating as a daily newspaper strip, the Phantom has since been adapted for television, film, video games, and more over the years.
What do we know about The Phantom Netflix show?
According to scooper MyTimeToShineHello, Netflix is now developing a series based on The Phantom.
This is only a rumor and should be treated as such at this time, as there’s been no official announcement from Netflix regarding a Phantom television show. Should the rumor be true, it’s unclear if the series will be animated or live-action, as there’s no word how far into development the project is.
In 1996, Simon Wincer directed a The Phantom movie for Paramount Pictures. It starred Billy Zane as the titular character, while the cast further includes Treat Williams as Xander Drax, Kristy Swanson as Diana Palmer, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Sala, and James Remar as Quill, among others. While Zane was contracted to appear in two sequels, the movie only grossed approximately $23.5 million globally, and plans for any sort of follow-up were canceled.
Ryan Carnes then starred in a The Phantom television miniseries that aired on Syfy in 2010. The supporting cast of that project includes Cameron Goodman as Renny Davidson, Jean Marchand as Abel Bandermaark, Sandrine Holt as Guran, and Isabella Rossellini as Dr. Bella Lithia.
In 2014, it was announced that Mark Gordon and his production company were developing a new The Phantom film alongside Management 360. Drew Simon was attached to executive producer; however, the movie ultimately never came to fruition.
Other The Phantom adaptations include a 1943 serial starring Tom Tyler, an unaired pilot made in 1961 with Roger Creed, a 1990s animated series titled Phantom 2040, which ran for 35 episodes, and more.
