Colin Farrell has become an integral part of the DC Universe and gave a splendid performance as the titular character in The Penguin. However, not many people know that the actor was originally supposed to star in another DC project that could have been completely different from what moviegoers have seen him do so far. That project was none other than the long-discussed ‘Sgt. Rock’ movie.
Although it has been announced that the film is no longer in development, Farrell revealed that he was supposed to star in the aforementioned title, explaining how it could have been something truly special if it had moved forward.
While making an appearance on the HappySadConfused podcast, the ‘Ballad of a Small Player’ star opened up about his future in DC Universe and spilled the beans on the ‘Sgt. Rock’ film. During the conversation, he couldn’t stop praising the script and called it “fantastic,” while he also shared that he had a few conversations with filmmaker Luca Guadagnino about the project and what it could have looked like.
“God, that was a fantastic script. I wonder what’s happening with it. I know nothing about it, brother. I was gonna do it with Luca, and we spoke a couple of times, had some really nice chats, but I have no idea where it is now. But it should be made. It’s really, really good. There’s some wonderful stuff in it,” said Farrell.
His comments come almost six months after it was revealed that the title mentioned above was no longer in development. At the time, it was noted that the makers wanted to shoot the film in the UK and start during the summer. However, they couldn’t do that, and the studio decided to put the title on hold. As of now, the studio is hoping to begin production in 2026. But it’s still unclear whether Guadagnino and Farrell will remain involved in the project or not.
The ‘Sgt. Rock’ movie would have been a fascinating addition to the DC Universe. Fans have never seen the character in any live-action film, and the title could have introduced viewers to his story. Farrell would have been perfect for the role, which not only demands physical strength and grit but also the emotional depth to bring the character’s humanity to life and the chaos of war.
Let’s hope that we get to see that movie and the original duo returning for the highly anticipated title.
