The 83rd Golden Globes unveiled its list of nominees today, marking the debut of the Best Podcast category with six nominations.
Despite making it to the preliminary 25-title nominee shortlist and consistently topping podcast charts across various platforms, notable MAGA figures such as Megyn Kelly, Joe Rogan, Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens, and Ben Shapiro were absent from the final nomination list.
The inaugural Best Podcast nominees include Call Her Daddy, Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard, Good Hang with Amy Poehler, The Mel Robbins Podcast, SmartLess, and NPR’s Up First. Following criticism over a lack of diversity in its voting body, there is speculation that Golden Globes organizers are sidestepping potential political controversy by excluding prominent conservative voices.
The liberal-leaning podcast Pod Save America was also overlooked, along with several popular true crime podcasts, despite the genre’s frequent dominance in podcast rankings. Given the celebrity-hosted podcasts that did receive nominations, it seems the dissolution of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in 2023 has made Golden Globes organizers cautious of any potential backlash.
While noticeably absent from the official nomination list were overtly political podcasts, it remains unclear what the criteria for this category are. This is particularly intriguing given that The Joe Rogan Experience has been the most popular podcast across all major platforms, including Spotify, Apple, and YouTube, for years, reports the Irish Star.
Conservative figure and Charlie Kirk confidante Candace Owens frequently promotes conspiracy theories on her show, Candace. These often pertain to marginalized groups, including the LGBTQ+ and Black communities, which may have been too contentious to secure a Golden Globe nomination.
Former Fox News commentator Megyn Kelly, who now hosts The Megyn Kelly Show on SiriusXM, recently faced backlash for her remarks about convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, minimizing his offenses and claiming he is “not a pedophile” because he “was into the barely legal type,” including “15-year-old girls.”
Ben Bogardus, a journalism professor and department chair at Quinnipiac University, explained: “They’re trying to bill themselves as an award show that is for the masses and non-controversial, celebrating the best in entertainment. Having this political sideshow, I think they just wanted to avoid that.”
The 2026 Golden Globes ceremony is scheduled to broadcast live on Sunday, January 11, at 5 p.m. EST, with comedian Nikki Glazer returning to host the event.
