Dan Levy Says “Big Mistakes” Freed Him from His ‘Shell’ After Years of Worrying About Bad Reviews

Dan Levy isn’t thinking about reviews after Big Mistakes.

The series co-creator and star, 42, told musician Peaches in his conversation for Interview that making the new Netflix project helped him feel a newfound “lightness” about putting something “out into the world.”

“This is one of the few times where I feel so at peace with what we all made,” Levy said in the interview, published on Wednesday, April 15. “I feel so excited about [Big Mistakes] that I really haven’t thought twice about what happens once something is out.”

He added, “I’ve found that criticism has become this incredibly binary thing. It’s either the worst thing anyone’s ever seen or the best. And I think reading these scathing things that have been written scared me into my shell for a long time. It wasn’t until I made this show that I realized if you are thrilled with the work that you do and you feel like what you intended to make is exactly what you’re putting out into the world, you don’t even think about anything other than that.”

As Levy put it, he felt a “lightness going into releasing this to the world,” which he didn’t “think I’ve ever felt before because I’m so happy.”

The new series from Levy, which he co-created with Rachel Sennott, stars the Schitt’s Creek alum alongside Taylor Ortega as brother-sister duo Nicky and Morgan. The pair are “two deeply incapable siblings who are in over their heads when a misguided theft for their dying grandmother accidentally pulls them into the world of organized crime,” per a synopsis.

Levy told PEOPLE that he already has plans for a long run if the new series were to secure additional seasons on the streamer. “I know how the entire show ends,” Levy said while on the red carpet at the New York City premiere. “Oh, yeah. You gotta know what you’re playing with before you pitch it to somebody.”

The actor explained that after Schitt’s Creek ended in 2020, following a six-season run with dad and co-creator Eugene Levy, he “really wanted to make sure that the next thing I did in TV gave me that same sense of inspiration and passion and excitement and love and affection for the people I was working with.”

“I love these people so much,” he said of Big Mistakes. “I’m so proud of this cast and crew. People are working at, like, 110%. All I did was set the table for these people, and they ate.”

Making the show, he added, was a “really, really special experience,” as he hopes “to tell this story for seasons and seasons and seasons.”

Big Mistakes is now streaming on Netflix.
