Legendary soul and R&B singer D’Angelo left behind three children when he died at age 51 in October 2025.
A spokesperson for the four-time Grammy Award winner (real name Michael Eugene Archer) confirmed to Us Weekly that he was privately battling pancreatic cancer at the time of his death.
“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life,” the family spokesperson told Us in a statement. “After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025.”
The statement concluded, “We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind. We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all to join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.”
D’Angelo was well known for valuing his privacy, but it was public knowledge that he had three children, including a son, Michael, from his four-year relationship with the late soul singer Angie Stone. (Stone was killed at age 63 in a car accident in Montgomery, Alabama, in March 2025, mere months before D’Angelo’s death from cancer.)

Angie Stone
Stone dated D’Angelo in the 1990s, serving as the muse for his groundbreaking 1995 soul album, Brown Sugar. Their lives continued to be personally and professionally intertwined throughout the late ‘90s when he cowrote tracks for her 1999 debut album, Black Diamond.
Their son Michael was born in 1997, though the R&B couple ultimately called it quits in 1999. Stone went on to have a hugely successful career, earning three Grammy nominations, before she died in a car crash at age 63 in March 2025.
“Angie Stone’s voice and spirit will live on forever in the hearts of those she touched,” her spokesperson said at the time.
D’Angelo and Stone’s son Michael penned a heartfelt tribute to his mother, writing via Instagram: “I know you up there enjoying your god body 😂 I hope you got to see grandma and granddaddy …….i want you know how proud I am at the person you are…. I want you to know how much you inspired me every single day …… you never failed me ever ever….you never were a burden to me EVER …”
“If I had to do it all again I wouldn’t change nothing….im so grateful for the lessons that I learned from you, I hope to one day be as good to my kids as you were to me…..I just wanted to you to know that I got it from here , imma be okay,” Michael concluded.
Michael Archer
Michael, who was born in 1997, was D’Angelo and Stone’s only child together. He continued both of his parents’ musical legacies by performing under the name Swayvo Twain.
In March 2025, Michael admitted he’d tried to “to separate [himself] from [his] parents” as he launched his own career.
“It always felt like I was fated to be in their shadows forever,” he wrote via Instagram. “But thankfully, long before momma, left I learned to embrace them and their legacy full on.”
Michael reflected on the heartbreaking experience of losing both of his parents in the same year following D’Angelo’s death in October 2025.
“I am grateful for your thoughts and prayers during these very difficult times, as it has been a very rough and sad year for me,” Michael told People in a statement. “I ask that you please continue to keep me in your thoughts as it will not be easy, but one thing that both my parents taught me was to be strong, and I intend to do just that.”
Imani Archer
Imani was born in 1999, though her mother’s identity has been kept private. Like her father and older half-brother, Imani is a musician.
“I was born in Los Angeles but I moved around the east coast until I was about 13 years old. The place I lived in the longest was Kissimmee, Florida,” she told Bold Journey in November 2024. “Moving to LA was such a culture shock at that age, but I knew I was in the right place for my music career to blossom.”
Having started making music at age 16, Imani acknowledged experiencing a long process of “developing [her] sound, finding [her] voice, and learning how to write songs.”
“It’s been a learning curve,” she said in 2024. “I feel like now I’m in a place where I’m confident in my artistry and am so excited to share it with more of the world!”
Following her father’s death in October 2025, Imani shared a vintage photo of D’Angelo playing a guitar at her side. Imani captioned the photo with three “mended heart” emojis.
Morocco Archer
Little is known about D’Angelo’s younger son, as Morocco has chosen to live his life outside of the spotlight.
