Slumping Tigers aim to snap losing skid in series finale against the Royals
Losers of five consecutive games and six of their last nine on the road, the Detroit Tigers wrap up their three-game weekend series against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday night, looking to avoid their second straight series sweep. The Royals got off to a sluggish 8-17 start to the season but have since won 11 of their last 15, including seven out of nine at Kauffman Stadium, and tonight look to avenge a three-game series sweep at the hands of the Tigers back in mid-April. Detroit will start right-hander Brenan Hanifee (0-0, 0.00 ERA) in his first start of the season, and first since 2024, as the reliever has been forced into the rotation with the injury to Tarik Skubal and the suspension of Framber Valdez while the Royals will counter with second-year southpaw Noah Cameron (2-2, 5.40 ERA) who has allowed 17 earned runs in his last four starts.

With at least one hit in 18 of his last 20 games, Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. is hitting .297 this season with three of his five home runs coming in the last week. Witt, now in his fifth season in KC, comes into 2026 off back-to-back Silver Slugger and Gold Glove campaigns and is the only player in MLB history to hit 20 or more home runs and steal 30 or more bases in each of his first four seasons.
