Reality television, a hugely popular genre, attracts a diverse audience. The appeal stems from several different psychological appeals, including a natural fascination with drama and conflict.
First and foremost, humans have a natural curiosity in regards to disaster and discord. In an
written by Althia G. McLaughlin, MA, LCMHC, she states, “I liken this to the car accident on the highway, causing bumper-to-bumper traffic. People can’t help but to stop and stare because it is human nature to be fascinated by tragedy and extreme conflict. It can be hypnotic to watch—even when it’s happening on television.”
Humans are naturally attracted to these scenes, especially when on television and there are no direct consequences.
In addition, reality television fosters an illusion of connection with its characters. Viewers believe they are witnessing authentic daily lives, leading to a sense of personal relationship with the individuals on screen.
Beyond entertainment, reality television often serves as a social connector, sparking discussions and building rapport. Shows like “The Bachelor” or “Love Island,” for instance, frequently become a popular topic for people to discuss recent episodes.
For some, reality television offers a sense of comfort. As bad as it may seem, observing the drama, issues, and arguments of others can make viewers feel that their own problems are less significant. Alternatively, it can serve as a subtle reminder that even those who appear to have everything in order face challenges.
Reality television’s psychological impact extends beyond simple entertainment, potentially causing harm when consumed excessively. Constant exposure to its dramatic, exaggerated portrayals can lead viewers to feel dissatisfied with their own calmer, more ordinary lives. Therefore, like all things, reality television should be enjoyed in moderation.
