Dolly Parton fans were left outraged after the Queen of Country was accused of being “racist” due to one snippet of her new book.
As fans dive into the pages of Dolly’s new novel, Star of the Show: My Life on Stage, some were left offended by one passage in which the 79-year-old singer detailed a moment in her childhood.
Dolly, who has recently overcome health issues, spoke about her life growing up in Sevierville, Tennessee, home of her theme park, Dollywood. However, one aspect of the novel struck a chord with some readers, who shared their fury over its contents on social media.
On Threads, one user posted, “I’m five minutes into Dolly Parton’s new book, she said: I watched my uncle say racist things, and get in trouble, I ‘learned what not to say.’ He was such a good respectful person. I don’t know what to do.”
The user later followed up, “I returned it. I’m gonna be sick. I’m literally in tears.”
After the racist allegations, many fans took to the replies fiercely defending the country legend, arguing that she’s done so much for the Black community throughout her decades in the spotlight.
One fan wrote, “You are reading way, way too much into this. If Dolly Parton isn’t good enough for you, no white person ever will be.”
Another added, “I know exactly what to do: Remember that, in the 1970s, way before you were born, when I was a tiny little Black child, Dolly was in ‘The Best Little Wh0rehouse in Texas’, and she threatened to quit the movie unless the cast were integrated. She didn’t remain silent then and hasn’t since.I also remember the r@cism I grew up with in that era and learned how to perform and what to say, and I found my voice when I got older and in a safer space.So what to do? Accept that we’re not perfect.”

They continued, “And, furthermore, accept who Dolly has been and is now: someone who gladly and happily includes Black and Brown people, including queer people, into her orbit. Now you can continue to cancel her all you like; I won’t stop you, but I won’t allow myself to join your crusade, because I am not ashamed of my mostly yt gay best friends who love, accept, and include me, not ashamed to call out ytness in front of them or anyone else, and definitely not ashamed to support imperfect people who change.”
Another supporter went on to mention, “She also donated all the royalties from Whitney Houston’s ‘I will always love you’ cover to poor mostly black neighborhoods in TN, while also single-handesly spearheading and funding the literacy campaign known as imagination library. I haven’t read the book, but her record stands on business.”
In addition to this, Dolly has secretly funded music equipment and programs for struggling, predominantly Black high schools for decades. She also explicitly voiced her support for the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020. In essence, Dolly’s actions highlight a commitment to racial equality and uplifting communities.
